Frequently asked questions
Everything a normal person might wonder before recording their first item — in plain language, no fine-print voice.
Getting started
The basics — what we do and how an item record works.
We're a friendly little tool for keeping track of stuff that moves between neighbors — the drill, the ladder, the casserole dish that never quite made it home.
You record what was lent or borrowed, add a photo so there's no confusion, pick a return date, and we send polite email reminders to both of you. No more awkward “hey, just checking…” texts.
Snap a photo, add the other person's name and email, choose when you'd like it back (and how early to nudge), and you're done. We email both of you when the record is created and again before the return date.
Either person can mark an item as returned, and the lender can confirm — so everyone stays on the same page without a group chat pile-on.
Absolutely. When you create a record, you choose whether you're the lender or the borrower. Either way, reminders go to both of you — we stay neutral, like a helpful neighbor who remembers what happened even when everyone else “forgot.”
No. The Loan Reminder is designed only for tracking physical items. It does not support money lending, repayment schedules, interest, payments, or financial agreements.
No. The Loan Reminder is a friendly tracking and reminder tool for physical items. It does not create a contract or establish legal ownership.
No App Store or Google Play download — there isn't a native store app (yet!). You can use The Loan Reminder in any browser, or install it as a progressive web app (PWA) for a home-screen icon and full-screen experience.
After you sign in, open Settings or your account menu and choose the install option when your browser supports it:
- Add to Home Screen (iPhone Safari)
- Install app (Android Chrome)
- Install app (desktop Chrome or Edge, when offered)
Step-by-step: How to install The Loan Reminder. The other person never needs to install anything — they use the links in their emails.
For the other person
What your neighbor, friend, or family member experiences.
No account required. They'll get emails from us with a link to view the shared item details. That's it — no password, no app install, no awkward signup lecture on your doorstep.
Just the useful stuff:
- A one-time heads-up when the item is recorded
- Friendly reminders before the return date (you choose the timing)
- Updates if something changes — like a return request or confirmation
We don't send newsletters, ads, or promotional blasts. Account holders may get an occasional personal check-in or feedback note from the founder — always with an unsubscribe link.
No. We use their email to send messages about the item you recorded — not newsletters, ads, or promotional campaigns.
We word everything like a helpful neighbor, not a debt collector. Every email explains why they received it and includes a link to read more or opt out of reminders.
When you add their email, we ask you to confirm you have permission to share it — the same common courtesy you'd expect if roles were reversed.
Yes. They can unsubscribe from reminders for that item or from all The Loan Reminder reminders to their address — no account needed. You can also edit or remove the item record anytime from your dashboard.
Yes. From your dashboard you can update the return date, change the reminder schedule, stop automated reminders, or mark the item returned whenever you need to.
Plans & limits
Free is genuinely useful; Pro is for power lenders.
Free includes up to 3 active items at a time, up to 2 photos per item, automatic email reminders, shared borrower links, and return tracking. Plenty for most of us with a garage full of good intentions.
Pro adds unlimited active items and up to 8 photos per item. See pricing for current rates.
Mark something as returned (freeing up a slot) or upgrade to Pro for unlimited active items. We'll let you know before you hit the wall — no surprise lockouts mid-ladder season.
Yes. Cancel from your account settings whenever you like — no phone calls, no guilt trip. If you drop back to Free, you keep your records; you'll just need to stay within the active-item limit.
Returns, privacy & safety
How we handle your stuff, your data, and your neighbors.
When an item comes back, either person can say so. The lender confirms the return, and we let everyone know it's settled — no lingering “did you get it back?” threads.
If plans change, you can update the return date or remove the record entirely from your dashboard.
We collect only what we need to run the service — item details, contact info, and photos you upload. We don't sell your data. Read our Privacy Policy for the full picture, in plain language.
So emails stay neighborly and PG-13. We automatically scan item names, descriptions, and photos before anything goes to the other person. If something needs a tweak, we'll let you know — better a quick edit than an awkward email nobody wants to open.
Questions, bugs, or feature ideas — we're real people and we read everything. Send us a message and we'll get back to you.
Still wondering about something?
We're happy to help — whether it's about your account, a reminder email your neighbor received, or whether we can remind Mike about the ladder (we can't call him, but we can email).
